External 1TB usb hard drive is not found when plugged in to new macbook air

I have purchased a new MacBook Air 13" early 2015 running el Capitan 10.11.1

I plugged into the usb a 1TB transcend storejet external HD.

The HD lights up indicating there is power, but there is no way to find it on my computer.

It is not in the finder nor is it in the 'about this mac' system report when it is plugged in.

The drive does work on an older macbook that I have but not on the new one.

It would be nice to access the files on my new mac when I plug it in.

It did not show up in disk utility.

I read a few other posts earlier, and one said to restart.

So I restarted the computer and upon startup, the external drive appears.

Thank you for your assistance Oglethorpe.

Maybe I need to post another post, but on my old MacBook Pro the regular built-in hard drive would always appear on the desktop, it does not on this macbook air. Is that normal for the newer computers?
