Completely black screen - can't power off/on; tried calling it from my home phone and it doesn't ring. The last month or so it had felt like it wasn't responding to my touch as it had prior. Do you suppose it's just old/needs a new battery? Thank you

It sounds like you are unable to charge your phone at all anymore. From what you describe it could very well be a bad battery but before jumping to that conclusion I would suggest taking a look at this support article about that kind of an issue:
