VDs I burn with iDVD will work on newer DVD Players but not on older DVD Players. Any suggestions?

I am running an iMac with OS X El Capitan 10:11.1 and iDVD 7.1.2.

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), OS X El Capitan (10.11.1), iDVD 7.1.2

Are you using DVD+R disks? Those are not compatible with DVD players before 1997. The DVD-R is compatible with all DVD players.
