Unrealistically slow app download speeds in iTunes 12

Talking about 0.1mb per second here.

I've done some reading on this issue and people have suggested changing the DNS settings on the router - but here's the problem: my iPhone and iPad are on the same network and don't suffer the appallingly slow download speeds that the macbook does.

Any suggestions?
