Upgrade operating system

My iMac is about 2 years old and I am having problems with Safari version 6.2.8 it's old I know. My operating system is 10.8.5 and I am afraid, from what I have read, to upgrade to 10.10.1, I really don't want my whole world to come crashing down. I've seen sites to download newer versions of Safari but here again I am a bit leery because of my latest download of iTunes, which really ***** and makes it slow and problematic to operate. I'm thinking if downloading a program directly from Apple has messed me up, it's even more risky to download from a third party.

Safari crashes and locks up all the time especially if I open Facebook.

Any suggestion, just wondering if Apple has resolved the issues with 10.10.1, or if my computer will run the software….it's always sitting in my software updates page……...

Sure was a lot less complicated when I owned a Commodore 64……..

Thanks for your help

The first thing would be to diagnose the issues that you are currently

having before attempting any upgrade, since upgrading a "shaky" system

(especially 3 OS X versions) will become worse or render the upgraded system

unusable. Safari crashing and freezing (even if old) is not good. May need to

do some cleaning up. You should download, install, and run an app called

Etre Check and post the results here (http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck).

The application was developed by a long time participant on the Apple

forums. We'll try to help clean things up before the next step of upgrading.

As for iTunes, did you update via the Mac App Store or did you actually download

the full iTunes installer? If you did the update method, download the full installer

from here and see if it helps: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.

Actually, the current version of OS X is 10.11.1.

I ran the etrecheck, the only highlighted items below, everything else checked out. I have no idea what this means. Download the latest version of iTunes, still the same issue….

Looking at your full report I think I see one major issue, you have antivirus software (Sophos) installed. Not only is it worthless as there are zero viruses for OS X it may be the cause of your problem. OS X does not need any cleaning, antivirus, or ANY third party maintenance utilities to run well. OS X runs best if left totally alone. There is a very small amount of malware for OS X however that is very easily avoided by:

  • Never using a torrent site to download anything.
  • Keep OS X up-to-date
  • Read and follow the instructions in this SCAMS article

Locate the developers instructions for uninstalling Sophos and follow them to the letter. Then restart the computer in Safe Mode and then restart normally and test the system.

I also noticed you do not appear to be backing up the computer, if I am correct this is both short sighted and foolish. Eventually you will lose valuable information including photos, music, financial information, etc. Operating ANY computer without a sound backup plan is a recipe for disaster. Get yourself a External Hard Disk and begin using Time Machine to back up your compute.r If you are not familiar with Time Machine then please read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support

To uninstall "Sophos" use the Remove Sophos Anti-Virus program. It will be installed in your Mac's Applications folder, unless you moved or deleted it. In that case, follow their uninstallation instructions here: https://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/122710.aspx

Beware that its effectiveness is poor. It leaves many components that will require manual removal, a typical characteristic of garbage software.

"MacKeeper" also appears to be installed. Unlike "Sophos" its uninstaller works with nearly complete effectiveness. Read below.

Follow these instructions to uninstall MacKeeper. They have been tested with the most recent version of MacKeeper. Earlier versions than the one released in 2012 required more extensive work to uninstall all its components.

If you actually used MacKeeper to alter your system, e.g. "remove excess binaries" or such, you will need to reinstall OS X as well as all your additional software. Uninstalling MacKeeper is insufficient to reverse the corruption it is capable of - once again, that is if you used it.

If you merely installed MacKeeper but did not use it to perform any particular action, the following instructions will suffice.

  • If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.
  • Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
  • Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
  • Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.

You will be asked to authenticate (twice):

User uploaded file

You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it:

User uploaded file

Just click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.

After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash and restart your Mac.

Recovery Procedure

Follow these instructions if uninstalling MacKeeper alone does not result in a usable system.

  • If you have a backup that you created prior to using MacKeeper, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of MacKeeper.
  • If you do not have a backup that predates the use of MacKeeper, create one now. To do that read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.
    • The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new User Account whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
    • To erase and install OS X read How to reinstall OS X on your Mac.
      • Follow the instructions in that document under Erase your drive and install OS X.
      • Then, follow the procedure in Move your content to a new Mac.
      • When asked how you want to transfer your information, select Transfer from a Mac, Time Machine backup, or startup disk.
      • Under Select the Information to Transfer, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
    • Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.
    • "Non-essential software" is a broad category that includes but is not limited to third party "cleaning", "maintenance", and "anti-virus" products.

Thanks for your help. I do use Time Machine but had it turned off because of some musical software I use, they suggested I leave it off. Not sure why exactly. I've tried to do what I can, uninstalling Sophos and trashing it, getting rid of Mac Keeper, which I didn't use as it was a remnant of a transfer from my old computer to this one. Didn't even know I had it. I downloaded and installed the full version of iTunes. Still get the color circle which wasn't an issue until I did the separate upgrade from Apple. The program works, but any time I do anything, play a song, scroll to a different song, open a different folder, color circle for 10 seconds or so, play another song, color circle, 10 seconds, etc. Regarding Safari, when opening Facebook, that's when within a few minutes I will get the color circle and the page will freeze, but am able to close the page and go about my business on different sites, it only seems to happen with Facebook. Does this have something to do with how Facebook seems to load any video automatically. As I scroll, video after video will open automatically.

I'm really scared of the recovery procedure. I have a number of musical programs that were, at least for me, a big challenge to install, authenticate, activate, ilok, and other things I can't remember at the moment. I'm an old guy and obviously not too savvy when it comes to technical issues.

Again, thanks for your help, if you have any suggestions I will do what I can.

Thanks……...
