My computer has crashed and I need to access a file before I can get it fixed. The file is on my Time Capsule, but I need to access it from my wife's computer. When I open Time Machine on her computer, it defaults to her user side.

Use Finder to access your TM backup. Then copy the file. Do not write to your TM backup via Finder since that can mess up your backup.
Please hold down the option key and select
Browse Other Backup Disks...
from the Time Machine menu in the menu bar. The menu icon looks like a clock running backwards. If you don't have that menu, open the Time Machine preference pane and check the box marked
Show Time Machine in menu bar
