Ten-year-old son wants a device

Ten-year-old son wants a device for games and for texting. It looks like iPod Touch is that device. Can we set it so that a password is required for downloading apps -- in such a way that he cannot just turn that feature off and download whatever he wants? Also, is there a way to require a password for deleting text history? I would also like to limit his texting to an approved list of friends and relatives, but apparently that isn't possible? Is there some other device where that IS possible?

You can read what Apple says about parental controls

There are also tons of articles

You just need to google iPad and parental controls (iPads and iPods are mostly the same in how they work)

What you may be able to do is to restrict out iMessage and see if there's another texting app that allows you more control.
