I should have stated, 'automating from the command line'. We would like to update all of our managed various OSX boxes at predetermined times without having to log onto each. We had been relying upon softwareupdate in previous OSX versions but Apple has removed this ability which makes OSX more expensive to manage.

I am sitting here in front of El Capitan (10.11.1) and softwareupdate (/usr/sbin) is in the default OS X search path. In the Terminal, look at the manpage for softwareupdate, and it shows how to automate checking and installing available updates.
You could build a Bash script containing the software update command that is accessed by a LaunchDaemon plist that runs once a day at a time prescribed by you.
