Cannot sync calendars from iphone 9.1 to Macbook OS 10.11.1

I am struggling since upgrading my laptop Macbook Pro to El Capitain 10.11.1. Calendars do not sync at all. It appears contacts and others do sync.

My computer is now running horribly slow and is so unresponsive I cannot even force quit frozen programs.

iPhone 5s, iOS 9.1, Macbook pro running OS 10.11.1
