word count in pages showing 0?

I have just started using Pages - this is literally my first document! (running 5.6.1) I've moved from a MacBookPro with the full Office Suite onto a MacBook Air and decided to try Pages, Number, Apple Mail etc as an alternative to re-purchasing Office with Word, Excel and Outlook. I have found where to bring the Word Count floating window up, but it is determinedly showing 0. I have tried saving, closing and re-opening the document; copying from Notes mode to Document mode; highlighting text but it stays at zero. This is one of my main functional requirements!! Please? I can't see anyone else with a similar problem on the forum. Thanks
