Q: External Drive not seen after El Capitain installed

Hi All

Up graded to El Capitain and now my Gtech External drive is not recognised by my iMac.

Connect via Thunderbolt and drive behaves as it should when powering up but nothing appears on desk top

Disk utility sees a media attached but cannot do anything

Any ideas anyone

HI All

Good news have sorted this out the PSU had developed a fault so was not giving the correct 'amperage' but volts were OK so drive would not kick in as it should, will have to replace it.

IT says the driver be is uninitialized. It has to be formatted, preferably for Mac OS X. Click the Erase button.

Problem drive has some clients work on it which I have been editing, the drive was fine before El Captain, so can i now go back to previous OS?

YOu'd need to go back to a Time Machine installation. Or use a boot drive with the previous OS on it. You can't run an old installer on the current OS. You might have to find someone with an old system that you can use to copy the contents off the drive. How is the drive formatted?

Drive formatted for Mac by pervious OS (drive is 1 year old) been working fine until now

TThat's very strange. I haven't heard of any problems like that. You might want to try the first aid function or Disk Warrior.

I had 2 different drives with similar behavior/reports earlier this year – bit nothing specific to EC, Have you tried a different interface and/or cable and/or power supply?

Trying to get hold of a different cable at present and I have another drive using a similar PSU so will give it a go also.
