double birthday entries

I am on 9.0.2 on a iphone 5. I have just noticed that all of my birthday notices are doubled after 1st Jan 2016. If I switch off all of the calendars my calendar shows no entries at all. If I only switch on the birthday calendar all the birthday entries are doubled after 1 st Jan 2016, but not before that date. What is going on?
