can the thunderbolt port be used to plug in pendrives

Hello, I am using a macbook pro and just wanted to know whether the thunderbolt port can be used to plug in pen drives or any other usb device using a connector / adapter or is it just a video port?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11), Bought and used in India

Thunderbolt is a compound video and data port. It can be used through an adapter to plug in several different peripherals including flash drives and external USB, and firewire drives, as well as actual Thunderbolt external drives.
