iPhone Contacts and CarPlay

I have just paid to have CarPlay added to my cars media system for an extortionate price.

All works okay EXCEPT making calls.

The system does not display contacts (or much else for that matter, but is ready for dictation)

When I press the "show contact" button the system (phone) exits back to the main CarPlay screen (and my iphone also does the same).

initially I suspected the unit.

I however have tried with an identical iPhone and it all works well.

Both phones are iPhone 6 running the latest OS.

Any ideas?

Its not as if I can re-install my phone app on iphone.

As I said, one iphone works; the other does not.

If you are having an issue with CarPlay not working as expected, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article - Get help connecting your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with your car stereo - Apple Support

Obviously you have tried some of the steps and there is no need to repeat those.
