How do I boot from the Recovery Disk?

My Macbook pro has been stuck on Disk Utilities. I tried to run the recovery disk but it brings me back to Disk Utilities. I have tried to run the Time Machine backup, but there is none. It won't let me reinstall OSX for some reason, and I have tried repairing the Disk. Im not sure what happened, but the computer blue-screened and I believe it was fixed. Later, It happened again and my stepdad tried to fix it and was unsuccessful.

Here's some specs:

  • 2008 or 2009 Macbook Pro
  • OS- Purchased with Snow Leopard
  • OS- Last installed Mavericks or Yosemite
  • (I don't know much more about the specs)

I don't know how else to get the computer to boot up properly. I really need to find out how to fix this problem because I would like to give this to my mom for Christmas because it is her computer and it has been broken for a while. Could someone please shed some light on some sort of solution?

MacBook Pro, Urgent!!! Need solution Soon!
