Using Yosemite, though I can add an attachment to a new email I've written, when I'm writing a Reply, there's no attachment button in the toolbar any more. S the only way I can attach a file to a Reply is by opening a New mail page, attaching the file, then copying it and pasting the copy in under the text of what I've written as a Reply. I can't believe this is the way Mail in Yosemite has been designed to work.

I've found that the easiest is to simply drag the image into the message window - have you tried that?
Also when composing your message in the upper right you will see an icon that looks like a paperclip. That icon is the link to ad an attachment. Apple talks more about attachments in Mail (Yosemite): Add attachments
Thanks for your response, which gives the solution. It was silly of me to look only in the upper left corner (where the paper clip is when you're writing an email, and was also when replying to one in 10.6.8, from which I've recently graduated to an an iMac with Yosemite) instead of looking all along the toolbar..
Thanks for this, it's certainly a solution, but rkaufmann87 below has also pointed me to the Attach (paper clip) button, moved from the left to the right end of the toolbar, where I'd been too hidebound to look.
