Reviewing a document with tracked changes causes pages to work slow

I've reviewing a large document (250 pages) that has extensive changes made to it. As I review the changes the mac spinning wheel happens and pages becomes unresponsive for a few seconds. Then it works fine. This would be a minor inconvenience if I only had a few changes to review, but I've got around 4500. I open the same document in Microsoft Word and I have no issues. I save a copy of the document in pages format and I still get the sluggish issue described above. Has anyone else encountered this or better yet does anyone know how to fix it? I've tried reinstalling pages but that didn't work.

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)
