Why does Safari automatically put an "s" after "http"?

Safari seems to automatically insert an "s" after "http", making it a search for a secure site, when all I want is the "http" insecure site. To get to many sites I have to manually delete the s in the url. It's infuriating- and probably a setting I don't know about- but I'm about ready to go to Chrome or Firefox!

One, don't download Chrome. Google has shady privacy issues, not to mention, it's a massive RAM hog. It uses up too much of your computer's resources. If you absolutely hate Safari, go with Firefox. That being said, there's nothing wrong with a website having "https" in front instead of "http." A secure connection is better than an insecure connection. I mean, you're on this website, aren't you? You should notice the padlock and the fact that "Apple Inc." along with the padlock are both green. It means your connection to the site is encrypted. Banks, most online retailers, plus Twitter all use secured connections.

I know that. I have heard that from any people who don't seem to have read my post. Many sites don't support https connectivity, and I get a message that "Safari can't connect to this site because a secure connection cannot be found" or words to that effect. THIS IS WHEN I CLICK ON A LINK THAT SAYS HTTP:// WITH NO S! When I go to the URL line in Safari and delete the "S" to make it just "http://" the connection is fine! What I want to do is to find out how to stop Safari from putting the "s" in automatic ally when I don't want it!

This just started happening to me in the last week or so. I'm guessing that it has something to do with Capitan.

When I type a search topic into the address/seach bar at the top of Safari, it shows about 10% progress and then hangs up. When I remove the "S" from https, it works fine.

The problem seems to be related to my internet connection. When using the wifi at my hotel, the hotel server uses a proxy to make sure that I've used a valid login. I think that Safari detects that it isn't making a direct, secure connection and that's why it hangs.

When using my switch at home (where no proxy is involved), the https google searches work just fine. That's why I believe that the problem is related to using a proxy.

It would be great if I could make it default to http for an insecure connection to google whenever I want. It's such a pain to have to dig through the address and remove the s every time that I do a search.

I'm still using Yosemite, so I don't think it's El C related, but I think you've got something with the proxy thing. I'm using a proxy server, and I don't recall this problem happening before I started it. I'll cancel the proxy server and see if it improves. As it is I can't even get to Wikipedia without having to dig through the URL to erase the s. Yu're right- major pain!

Ok. I can't get a response from Medicare when asking to see plans. Comcast also would not respond when trying to search in a self-help forum. No proxy here. I CAN do these things on my iPad where I AM using a proxy. Using El Capitan on my Mac. These problems appeared last night. Recent changes: just enabled iCloud. Thanks for any ideas.

Hey, thanks for responding. My Mac is continuing to act up in different ways, so maybe my problem is part of a very local screwup. Also, that's why I took so long to answer.

Yes, the s is on most sites. I tried to delete from Medicare.gov, but it reappeared. I favor this move to greater security, but not if I can't option out of it for sites that aren't caught up yet. Not finding any discussion googling this subject, so I think we are few and far between who are running into it. Just got a new Mac, which I'm still hooking up, so I can get to Apple Help at no cost, and they usually know what they're talking about. I will ask for you what's up and get back, ok?
