syncing camera roll and photo library

my mother in law gave me her old iPod touch but wants my help getting the pictures off. I can use iTunes sync, image capture, as well as direct viewing of the dcim folder images for the camera roll, however, i cannot find anyway to get the pictures in Photo Library off of this device.

Why aren't the photo library images being available for transfer and how do i make them available?
