Read Effective defenses against malware and other threats. That's what I do, with many Macs, over many years. Never having encountered a single unintentional instance of malware intrusion I have had to work quite a bit to duplicate the problems other people complain about on this site, which essentially involves intentionally doing the opposite of what's in that document.

If you choose to let someone use your Mac, at the very least create a non-Admin account, or have her log in as a Guest. That limits the potential damage. Read: OS X El Capitan: Set up users on your Mac and follow the instructions under Let occasional users log in as guests. Don't reveal your login password to anyone.
