macbook shuts down when battery is installed

Hello, i am new here and not super computer literate. My early 2008 macbook works great with power cord hooked up. The computer did not come with a battery. I bought a new battery for it and as soon as i install it the computer shuts down. It will not restart until the battery is removed. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Did you install the battery while the Macbook was on? Try a pram reset.Hold down Command/Option/P/R/ keys and power button for three chimes at startup. This with battery installed. Also a SMC reset. Remove battery and power and hold the power button down for at least 5 seconds. Reinstall battery and power and restart.
