First time iMAC owner. I don't know yet what the OS is or really anything. What I do know is that I bought it for $100 and was told it did not have a HDD.
It does not have a keyboard or mouse yet either. I plugged it in and after a min I heard a chime and the fan turned on (kind of loud)But the screen stayed dark. Would the iMAC drive chime without a HDD?

It's almost impossible to diagnose the thing without opening it. Do you have any idea what year iMac it is? If you only paid $100 you may have gotten a bargain or just wasted $100, we just cannot tell. If you don't know the year then the only thing I'd recommend is taking it to an AASP in your area and paying to have it professionally diagnosed. To find one please click AASP Locator

I've discovered from a 2010 paper on the box (genius bar confirmation) that it is a late 2009.
The box says model a1312 iMAC 27"/2.8QC/2x2/1tb/4850-512mb-usa. any help? I'll get around to a AASP soon if I have to.
Take it to an AASP to have it professionally diagnosed, then you can tell how much it will cost to get it functioning again. If you don't know any in your area, click the link I provided earlier and contact one.
