    Hi thatsmary,

If you are unable to connect to your cellular data network, try the troubleshooting steps in the resource below.  I've highlighted some key information for you.  Click on the link for complete details.

If you can‘t connect to a cellular network
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201415

Verify that your account is active and in good standing.

Make sure there are no outages in your area.

Check that your device isn't blocked from receiving cellular services and is set up with the right data plan.

    • Take out the SIM card and put it back in. If the SIM card is damaged, or doesn't fit in the SIM tray, contact your carrier.

    • Check for a Carrier Settings Update.

    • Restart your iPhone or iPad.

    • Reset your Network Settings. Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This also resets Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings that you've used before.

    Happy Holidays to you!

But try a  reboot press & hold power button & menu button

Hold both down until you see apple logo .

    Hi thatsmary,

At this point, I would suggest backing your iPhone and try to update the iOS software first.  If that does not resolve the issue, then try setting up the phone as a new device.  In answer to your question to briansyddall, I'll include some additional information about using an APN as well.

How to back up your devices using iCloud or iTunes
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203977

Put your device in recovery mode and set it up again
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201263

    1. Connect your device to your computer and open iTunes. If you don't have a computer, borrow one from a friend or go to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for help.
    2. While your device is connected, force restart it: Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home button for at least 10 seconds, and don't release when you see the Apple logo. Keep holding until you see the recovery mode screen.

    3. When you see the option to Restore or Update, choose Update. iTunes will try to reinstall iOS without erasing your data. Wait while iTunes downloads the software for your device.
If the download takes more than 15 minutes and your device exits recovery mode, you'll need to repeat these steps and choose Restore instead of Update when you get back to this step.

    4. After the Update or Restore completes, set up your device. If you previously backed up your device with iTunes or iCloud and had to restore your device in step 3, you might be able to restore from your backup during setup.

About cellular data network settings on your iPhone and iPad
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201699

The Access Point Name (APN) defines the network path for all cellular data connectivity. You can view or edit the APN for cellular data services on your iPhone and iPad. If your device uses a SIM card and your carrier allows you to edit the APN, follow these steps.

If your APN settings are wrong, you might lose cellular data connectivity and receive additional charges. Don't edit the APN unless directed by your carrier or IT manager. Contact your carrier to verify the correct APN settings.

    Take care,
