just don't shoot me for asking this....
Due to limited bandwidth at home I am searching for a way to download an OS X installer file to a windows laptop in the office.
Is there any way to download an OS X installer not using the App Store?
MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2011), Mac OS X (10.6.8)
Can't you just put a flash drive into the USB slot and download the installer onto it, then move the file from the flash drive to your Mac computer at a later date?
No. Why don't you take your MacBookPro to work and connect to your office network.
Once downloaded and prior to installing look in your Applications folder for Install Mac OS X El Capitan.app
make a copy of this to USB or other device/media. This is handy to have if you want to re install the OS without
needing to be on the internet, or installing it on another Mac.
If you are moving up from Snow Leopard to El Capitan, make sure there are updates for your third party apps
as this is quite a jump, and remember after SL power pc apps were are longer supported.
How about downloading it somewhere that has free WiFi. You can also take it to an Apple Retail Store if you have one nearby.
Might be best to ask first before turning up, you may need to make an appointment.
Any chance you could take your MBP to a friends or a relatives and use their internet connection.
Thanks for the response, but I am not allowed to hook up my private laptop to the company network (security considerations).
I am already kind of "pushing the limits" by planning to use the network for my private purpose (i.e. the OS X download).
I must have misunderstood the premise of your question, so my apologies for that. If you can't access the App Store, you can't download El Capitan. There is no other way to acquire it legally than through that channel. So, if you're not allowed to bring your home laptop, which I assume is a Mac, to work with you to use your office's Internet connection, there's nothing you can do. I'm sorry.
you can't use the Apple store from a non-mac computer, but what you can do is create a bootable USB with Windows
Take the Mac to a coffee house, public library, burger lube and download the software and be done with the pretzel logic.
Thanks, I had considered going to a public wifi spot as well, but from what I read it took many people more than 5..6 hrs for downloading the installer file due to its huge size :-(
The benefit of using the company network would be the available bandwidth ....
Guess I have to go back to my IT gurus and try to bribe them with some coffee/cookies to be allowed to hook my private MacBook Pro up in the office ....

your IT department may have a guest access Wi-Fi they can put you on. That way you're not on the corporate network.
