Depending on iPod shuffle model, there is a "Lock" function for the buttons. If your shuffle is 4th gen (current model), this is the user guide

The part about "Lock and unlock the iPod shuffle buttons" (press and hold Play/Pause button for three seconds) is on page 21. Hopefully, that's the problem, and it's not a faulty shuffle...


If that does not help, but the iPod still appears in iTunes when connected, you can try doing a Restore. This will erase the iPod, reinstall its software, and set it to default settings. The Restore button is on the iPod's Settings screen in iTunes.
