how do i close dashboard

I opened dashboard and have been trying to close it ever since. I was able to remove the 4 items on the dashboard but now I have an out of focus screen that does nothing. Is there a way to close the program with out removing it until whenever I decide to start using it again? iMac with EC, Thank you
