failure to launch after interrupted update

My battery died during the update to elCapitan.

I am now getting the following error screen and can no longer access my user. I can only access the safemode-safari only as a guest.

Tried to reset the SMC but no change,

I can't even restart it using the backup external drive.

Prognosis?
