Please Update you MacOS to the latest patch level before installing Free Antivirus?
What does this mean?

Sorry, just noticed this is related to Avira. Your computer doesn't need Avira or any other such Anti virus product.
No, I had someone trying to hack into my computer so a Tech friend advised me to run Avira Virus/malware program-when I tried to download it-I got that message.
How was someone trying to hack your computer? How did you discover the attempted hacking?
Your friend has not done you any favours by suggesting Avira.
Your best bet is to find a new friend who will not be feed you this information to put such garbage on your Mac. Then uninstall Avira.

There is not a good AV software package for the Mac. All of the AV software are worthless scams on a Mac.
For malware you candownload and install https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/mac/ to rid your Mac of the adware that is infesting it.

Nothing that is not already included in OS X is "good". If you want your Mac to work avoid all that garbage.
