Passport for Mac is plugged into USB port on MacBook Pro Yosemite. Shows up on desktop. Can open and see past backups, but it is not backing up. Worked last month. At first didn't even show up on desktop but restarted and now am at this situation.
30 minutes later--after three tries of ejecting and starting it is finally working--any idea why this might happen?

This is a Time Machine backup?
check your >System Preferences>Time Machine>options
and make any appropriate changes:
Also from the Time Machine icon you can open TM to monitor any progress, or processing before a backup begins.

yes I always monitor the progress by clicking on the icon.
Don't see anything in preferences that would aid or hinder backups.
But I did always wonder how I can be backing up every hour through time machine when I have to plug the passport into the computer to do it?
Well yes you have to have it plugged in for the hourly. There are local snapshots that get stored on your computer- storage space dependent.

A Time Capsule (WiFi) makes these backups more seamless.
