Low resolution in clamshell mode on wake from sleep

I use my MBP in clamshell mode connected to an ASUS PA238 display via HDMI. When the MBP wakes up, it changes the resolution of my ASUS display to something really low, I'd guess 800x600. I then have to pull the lid open, wait while the screen flickers a bit until I'm back at native resolution, and then close the lid again.

Obviously this is a bug, I'm wondering if there are known work-arounds, or at least if there are any other people suffering from this problem?

I do not consider never allowing my MBP to go to sleep a workaround BTW!

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)
