I would try resetting network settings if all else fails.

Part of the reason for my initial question is that after the above described incident I no longer saw the "Trust This Computer?" message (which I used to see all the time). I looked at the article that @sberman suggested and it said, "If you tap Don't Trust, you'll see this alert each time you connect your device to that computer".
This is the opposite of what I have been experiencing, plus my phone is syncing with iTunes when I plug it in; so I guess everything is OK. Thank you both for your replies and assistance!
