Not Available- try again later

I've been trying to hard reset and restore my old iMac to pass it along to my daughter. After erasing it I have been unable to upload OS X Mountain Lion as the YouTube tutorials indicate. For the past 24 hours I've received an error message that the download is temporarily not available. Can anyone give me an idea about what to try next?

I used DiskMaker X to install OS10.11 but it didn't work (this OS version is either not supported or needed to be upgraded from an earlier version?) If I buy a copy of Mountain Lion from the Apple Store will that solve my problem?

As you can see, I'm in over my head. Please help.

What version of OS X was originally installed on the computer when you bought it new?

IT was a used computer when I bought it. I believe it had OS X Mountain Lion Installed.

That makes it a little more challenging, you need to research what version of OS X originally came installed on the computer. One place to begin looking is http://www.everymac.com/

The original OS was 10.5.6. Why is this important? Do you think an Apple repair technician know how to get my computer up and running?

That means you have to buy the 10.6.x Snow Leopard upgrade DVD ($20) and do an erase and install of computer using that DVD. Then your daughter can upgrade to El Capitan the most current version of OS X.
