We just bought a third generation apple tv but it doesn't have the apple music app on it. how can we get that.

You don't. Apple Music is only available on the 4th Generation Apple Tv with TvOS.
Like Phil said, you can't directly. But you can use AirPlay if you have an iPad or other device and send it to your Apple TV that way. Good luck.
This is BS, why can't they just put out an upgrade for the millions of people that have the 3rd gen Apple TV? Come on Apple - don't be THOSE GUYS...
