hooking mac mini to stereo receiver for pandora listening

I have a new Mac Mini (Yosemite) and would like to hook it up to stereo receiver so I can listen to pandora throughout the house, not just in the office. I tried hooking up with sound cord (male to male 3.5 mm cord) but no sound. Do I need to connect with a cord that has HDMI on one end and 3.5mm male prong on the other end?

Mac mini, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

Thanks - sorry if I . . .?

I have no external speakers, only computer's internal speaker (minimal) and speakers in the sony screen. So, if I were to get some speakers (better than present) and could wire them out to the rest of the house from the office, how would I do that?

OR

as originally sought, how can I link the computer with my old stereo receiver, so I can listen to . . . .?

Sorry I'm so challenged in this realm.

Try plugging in again. You may not have had the plug fully inserted.

On my Minis, I insert the plug and although it feels like it is engaged,

it really isn't and needs a little extra push to fully engage.

Also, are you sure you plugged into Line Out?

Also, once working, there is still a possible issue. The Mini will only

deliver audio to a single output. So, if you select the outputting to the

receiver, you will lose audio on your Sony, if I understand the connection

scheme you have.
