CarPlay Will Not Connect or Stay Connected

I just got a 2016 Honda Civic and was excited to try CarPlay. It worked great... once. Since then I have had to restart my phone before turning on my car to get it to work again, and to make things worse the car will connect over Bluetooth for a few seconds - long enough for music to start playing - and then it "can't connect" to my phone even though the music continues.


I tried using a different lightning cable, which just gave me false hope. The phone connected briefly and the CarPlay screen appeared on the phone, but then it promptly disconnected again.


This is very frustrating. I don't want to power cycle my phone every time I get into my car. I don't know if this is Honda's problem or Apple's, but I can find zero information about it on either company's sites, possibly because my car is so new.

Hello All!


Issue Resolved with CarPlay "Device Not Connected" / Disconnecting Issue.


I had the issue with Apple CarPlay disconnecting after roughly 2 mins after making connection with the lightning cable.


I tried with two lightning cables and two iPhones (happened with one phone and not the other.)


I found that the "Onavo" App that works as a VPN to save date is causing this disconnect with CarPlay.


Go into : Settings --> General --> VPN and if "Onavo" is there remove it!

I would really like to be able to have access to my music library and use CarPlay but am unable to do so until this issue is resolved.

As I have been able to reproduce the issue with other vehicles and CarPlay systems I’m not sure if the issue is more of an Apple issue or a car system issue. I am inclined to believe that Apple could resolve the issue as there was a previous version of iOS where my vehicle did not have this problem.

However the problem seems to be related to a memory issue in the car infotainment system itself. It could easily be resolved with a setting where you could turn off indexing of the music library. I had a similar issue in an older Ford vehicle and this was the solution. I tried to do this by turning off the song by voice setting thinking that setting is what causes the system to try and index my music library, but that didn't resolve the problem.

I have the same car, same issues, conducted the same troubleshooting, and have come to the same conclusion that a large Apple Music library is at the center of the problem. Frustrating to say the least. With each new iOS version, I am hopeful it will get addressed - even though I truly believe the fix will ultimately have to come from Honda.


For the last week, I have had "iCloud Music Library" disabled and been experimenting whether the likes of Spotify and/or Amazon Music could fill my music void. I am quickly finding that Spotify, in particular, comes somewhat close but isn't without its share of usability and overall organizational issues. But it doesn't "crash" CarPlay so it has been refreshing for the past week to use and enjoy CarPlay without thinking it is going to flake out on me.

I was able to get CarPlay to connect consistently with my iPhone 6+ running 10.3.1 and my 2017 Honda CR-V Touring by deleting both profiles from the CarPlay section on iOS and then re-adding the phone via USB *only*. Here's what I did:


* in General --> Settings --> CarPlay, I deleted both profiles (there was one for wired USB and one for wireless

* in Honda --> Smartphone --> Apple (CarPlay), I deleted the entry for my phone

* turned car off completely and then started again

* wait for Honda system to turn on fully (i.e. wait until home screen appears)

* connect iPhone via Apple USB-Lightning cable

* in Honda --> Smartphone --> Apple (CarPlay), I re-added my phone

* in General --> Settings --> CarPlay, confirm only one profile with option 'Allow CarPlay while locked'


The key was to only have that one profile in iOS CarPlay with that option (which indicates it's the profile for wired USB.) If you see another profile with the option to use CarPlay when phone is near car, that's the option for wireless (I deleted this profile... not clear that my car supports wireless CarPlay.)


Another indicator: if phone is unlocked, the menubar will turn blue if using wired USB connection for CarPlay, purple if using wireless CarPlay (or what it thinks is wireless CarPlay.)

I have a 2017 Honda Accord and I am assuming that the hardware and software are pretty much the same. I have had my vehicle for 3 weeks and have not been able to connect to Apple CarPlay a single time. Seriously, not one time! The salesman was able to demonstrate when I picked the car up, but that was it.


I tried multiple cables both Apple and Non-Apple made with no success. It wasn't until I tried using a different port in my car that solved the issue, for me at least. I unplugged the cable from underneath the radio and then unplugged my iPod from the center console, plugged my phone into that port and got the exact same results, "No Device Connected" but when I plugged the phone back into the port under the radio, Apple CarPlay popped up. And has consistently popped up each and every time! So it seems that the Honda radio software gets confused when you have a device already plugged into one port. I tried this a few times. I can plug the phone into port 1 (under the radio) and plug the iPod into port 2 (in center console) and start the engine and CarPlay does not load. Unplugging port 2 and CarPlay will load. Plugging the iPod back into port 2 while CarPlay is connected and everything works fine. So it appears that only when you start the vehicle with something connected to port 2, CarPlay will not connect.

As has been the experience for others, my iPhone 7 connected instantly with CarPlay, but repeated attempts to connect my wife's iPhone 6s have failed. There is no VPN installed, the choice of port (only one device connected) and cable (Apple or the one supplied with our 2017 Audi Q7) make no difference, nor does restarting the car or rebooting the phone. The software is up to date. I did connect the car's media interface to the phone via Bluetooth, but that is a bit cumbersome and apparently needs to be done at each use. Any help with this frustrating situation would be appreciated.

I recently took my 2016 Honda Civic Touring in and had the latest update applied to the infotainment system. They said service bulletin 17-048 replaced 16-022 with a newer update. I believe this update was released in July 2017 They ran an update and now my software version is 1.F190.25. It’s been 2 weeks now and I’ve no longer had any of the issue I was having with my backup camera, carplay, etc. My experience is that honda will not update your system unless you express very specific issues noted in the TSB. This TSB notes that it is mainly to address issues with the system beeping constantly and returning to the home screen and other screen issues. However, It clearly fixes a number of other issues.
