upgrade ipad to from ios 4.3.3 to ios 9.1

I just bought a new (still in the box) iPad 2. It came with iOS 4.3.3. When I try to sync it with my computer I get a error 9. I've read everything I can find on error 9, and tried every trick. Finally downloaded Reiboot to get it out of the Recovery cycle loop. I suspect I need to do a number of upgrades (perhaps even firmware) that were associated with upgrades to iOS 5, 6, 7 and 8. Anyone have a solution?

Not sure if this will help or not, but when I recently updated my iPad 3 (? first one with lightning connector) from the original 7.1, the update was done in 3 steps. Took about 1/2 hour to do everything. Think it updated in increments as it was too much to do in one step.

If you have a computer with iTunes running on it, you need to upgrade that iPad by connecting up using its USB cable to a computer running iTunes and perform the iOS upgrade that way.
