You can open AppleWorks 6 word processing, spreadsheets & presentations in the iWork '09 apps (Pages 4, Numbers 2 & Keynote 5) respectively. You cannot open any other type (draw, paint or database) of AppleWorks 6 documents with any iWork application nor can you open AppleWorks 5 or any version of ClarisWorks documents. Drag the word processing documents to the Pages icon in the Dock or your Applications folder.

You can use the free LibreOffice on El Capitan to open ClarisWorks/AppleWorks 5 and 6 documents, and then export them to Microsoft, or other non-iWork '09 document formats. As with the iWork '09 applications, complex AppleWork documents comprised of multiple AppleWorks application data — may not open, or without the accuracy of AppleWorks itself. Some AppleWorks graphics may not be compatible, and AppleWorks databases may open in the LibreOffice spreadsheet (Calc) without formulas.
