Firewall was turned off

Hi, firewall on my MacBook Pro was turned off by default and I noticed that just now after using it for 3 months. To what was I exposed and is there a way to check if there is any danger? Thanks in advance for the answer !

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Firewall is off by default. Apple apparently feels comfortable with their built in protection that is off.

If you are using your own wireless network, then your router has its own firewall and it is not needed.

If you are out and about on "free" wifi , personally I would turn on the firewall. I would enable stealth mode in the options.
