How to reduce memory use of mail app when mailbox is empty

Mail appilication on older Ipad is using 3.3GB and the mailbox is empty? Why is the application taking up so much memory? Is there a way to reclaim the memory?

iPad (3rd gen) Wi-Fi, iOS 9.0.1
