empty desktop

Since updating to El Capitan my desktop is empty. I do have a desktop folder for my account and the files are there just not showing on the actual desktop. When I launch mission control I have only one desktop. Dragging the files to the desktop does nothing. I have tried changing the finder preferences by turning on drives which had been off before. Still nothing on the desktop.
