extracting music off ipod hard disc

i have an ipod classic 160 gb and it will not turn on at all...i have tried everything...I lost my iTunes library as well...want to extract my music files from the hard disc and i was told to use a zif to usb adapter...I saw some online for sale but wasn't sure what kind to get...is this the correct method to extract the files and if so which one should i purchase...thanks
