There are several Apple wireless mice. We'd need to know which one. But I know what you mean. I have the "Magic Mouse". Sometimes as soon as I press down on the lock the bottom plate falls on its own, other times it seems to be a struggle. But a downward press should release it.

Obviously, mine didn't fall off, broke most of my nails on one hand and used a butter knife that didn't end to well either. But I did get the back off and no ER visit. Ridiculous! Not impressed at all.

Like I said, the slide switch can be difficult sometimes. All I can suggest is to use something softer like a new pencil not sharpened to a point instead of a butter knife.

Individual mice will have individual faults but in general I find that holding the mouse upside down and flicking the black rectangle with my middle finger nail removes the back. It doesn't need strength, just a little practice.
