Q: Installed Windows 8.1 with Bootcamp in El Capitan. Could not remove with Bootcamp so I used Disk Utility. Now Windows still tries to boot with an error, lots of "other" space shown.

Long story short, I installed windows 8.1 using Bootcamp, it went very well. I was just curious as to how well it would run.

Anyways, tonight I decided to remove the Windows partition (Bootcamp Partition), and I got an error in Bootcamp that said "Sorry could not make Mac OS partition one again".

With that I went to Disk Utility and tried to partition the disk to one partition again, which it did, however now I have 40 GB of "other space". I literally have nothing stored on this computer, before I installed Windows 8.1 that was not there.

Also, when I boot I still get Windows booting first if I don't hold Option, then it goes to blue screen, obviously because it's not there.

I've booted to recovery, tried to repair, verify, erase free space, etc. I'm running a 2015 MacBook Pro 13" 128GB.

On a 2015 Mac, the disk is split into a Logical Volume Group and Volume for OS X and a partition for Windows. If BCA fails to restore it properly, the Windows part does not get coalesced properly into the LVG/LV. The other issues you have is that there are remnants of Microsoft Boot code in your EFI partition.

To solve both, the simplest and safest method is

    1. Backup OSX and all your files - Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support .

    2. Boot into Internet Recovery (Command+Opt+R) - OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support .

    3. Click on Utilties -> Disk Utility and Erase your internal whole disk.

    4. Restore OSX and your files - Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support .

This requires a separate external disk which can accommodate TM backup - Backup disks you can use with Time Machine - Apple Support .

Without having to download OS X again is there not another way to take care of this? I really don't mind working in Terminal. I would like to be able to do this without having to restore.

My internet connection is limited to 1.5Mbps because of where I live, it would take me days to finish the download.

Can you post the output of the following Terminal commands?

    diskutil list

    diskutil cs list

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

    sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

The "sudo" commands will prompt for your password, and it will not be echoed back. You may also see a warning about improper use of "sudo" and potential data loss due to "abuse" of the command.

You do not have a disk space issue. Please see the third page of Can't resize Macintosh HD partition and mount your EFI partition and check for Microsoft directory.

Thanks! Mounted and backed up EFI then removed all Microsoft files and directories and it is back to normal with booting.
