Apple Configurator 2 - iPads Resetting themselves randomly

Hello, I have recently setup an configured 43 iPad Mini 2's using Apple Configurator 2. This was a pain in itself but I finally got them all setup and working as they I wanted.

A nightmare has since started to unravel. Some iPads have decided to reset themselves randomly, at different times, and are at the 'Get Started' apple screen. Thus wiping all my restricted an pre configured options. The common message I have received is that they were working all day, then put onto charge / locked screen. They have returned to the iPad and it's somehow reset itself.

I have tried to find out why this is happening but finding it very difficult, possible answers are:

  1. Passcode entered incorrectly too many times triggering the iPad clean out
  2. An apple update is 'Accepted' by the user, downloaded in the background then installed whilst they weren't using it. Triggering the iPad to wipe itself.
This could explain the random resetting, the amount of time taken to download the update may be quicker / slower on some of the devices. There was one report saying the website I pre-installed was running really slow...this could have been due to the download.
  3. Hardware issue

Sadly that is all I can offer, my gut feeling says the update it the cause of this. But an update should not wipe all my pre-configured information if it is in a supervised state. I am almost 100% certain I ticked the option to not allow updates...maybe I am wrong.

Just a side note, I downloaded and updated all the iPads to the latest iOS before they were sent out (this was last Friday).

Has anyone else experienced this?

Same problem here with iPhones.

Started rolling out changes to a big batch of iPhones and many started coming back with the Get Started screen.

I first thought it was iPhone 4S issue. Then did their setup differently, still same thing.

Started looking into our Airwatch mdm server settings, haven't found anything that could be affecting it.

One common thing - iPhones reset themselves after pin code has been entered incorrectly. And this started appearing on newer phones too.

Today I finally go to the issue. Apparently it's the restrictions profile that we apply. Skipping the restrictions blueprint - iPhones work fine.

Gonna dig deeper into this later this week and see what restrictions cause this...

Hi,

Found a solution for my case - I had a passcode set for each device which was erasing the whole ipad after few failed attempts of passcode entry... If you go and check the passcode settings on the ipad and make sure the erase options are off... I had to turn off erase option by updating my profile on apple config:

Apple configurator - Under restriction enable "user can set passcode"

Apple configurator- Under the passcode area "DO NOT USE ANY OF THE OPTION"

Once you update the profile, save the unlock token to clear the passcode (which could be used in the future to clear passcodes) using Apple configurator and manually set the passcode.

Hope this helps!

We've been having the same issue but using AC 1.7.2.

I was going to update to AC 2 hoping that may be the fix but not sure after reading your post.

In our case, we have iPad's still using iOS 7. I started updating in the later stages of iOS 8 but then started getting iPads back that had wiped themselves and back at the "Get Started" stage.

I've been trying different app combinations thinking it might be a bad app but no luck.

Also, it only seems to happen to the iPad's using a newer iOS with our profile containing our Exchange ActiveSync payload. The older iOS with the same profile have had no problems.

Are you using an Exchange ActiveSync payload in your profile?

Hi

We do use passcodes and I did check the settings. We are still using Apple Configurator 1.7.2 so I don't have the same settings as AC2. I've been reluctant to update to AC2 after reading of all the issues with the upgrade and still having the same issue with the devices resetting.

The "user can set passcode" and "DO NOT USE ANY OF THE OPTION" must be options in AC2. The only option I have in the passcode area pertaining to erasing the iPad is "Maximum number of failed attempts"-(number of passcode entry attempts allowed before all data on device is erased), which I have set to "--" and assume would be unlimited as the only other options are 2 to 10.

I mentioned the Exchange ActiveSync only because we have 2 profiles. Some devices have a profile with an Exchange ActiveSync payload and other devices have a profile without it. There is only one profile loaded per device and the only difference between the profiles is theExchange ActiveSync payload. The devices with the Exchange ActiveSync payload and the newer iOS are the ones resetting.

It's a head scratcher.

Thanks
