iTunes iPhone sync turns my photos to "other"

When I sync my iPhone 6 plus to iTunes it always sees my photos as "other"

If I select zero photos to sync - the "other" is about 500 MB as I would expect.

If I select only one or two big photo albums rather than the whole collection, say 7GB total. It shows the additional 7GB as photos until the sync is finished when it shows 7GB of "Other" and no "Photos". But the photos are on my phone.

If I do my whole collection (which is what i'd like to do) it's 35GB of "photos" before I press sync but the moment the sync completed it shows 35GB of "other". Again the photos do make it to my phone.

Basically, after a sync iTunes always sees my photos as "other".

This wouldn't be a problem except it then thinks there isn't enough space for photos next time I sync because of all the "other". So every sync I have to first delete all 35BG of photos then re-add them again. So it takes forever and is a two stage process.

I have restored about 100 times to try to resolve this. Nothing seems to work.

Anyone?

Could be a bug in iTunes. Try a reinstall, you won't lose anything. Download from here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/?ref=http://itunes.com

If it won't install, you may need to remove the iTunes app from the Applications folder. Select the app and in Finder / File go to Get info. At the bottom, change all permissions to Read & Write and move it to the Trash. Then install iTunes.

If your computer is a Mac, are you setting iTunes to sync from the Photos app (or iPhoto) or from a folder on the Mac? You mentioned "albums" so that may mean you are syncing from Photos (or iPhoto). As a test, if you put a small collection of photos (or just image files) in a folder, and set iTunes to sync that folder, after the sync, do those photos still end up being "Other."

I don't have a solution. It may be a bug. When I have some time later, I'll try doing the same thing on my iPod touch, to see if I can reproduce the problem.

You may have a reason for not using it, but Photos can use your iCloud Photo Library

https://www.apple.com/icloud/photos/

Then your photo library would not take up any space on your iPhone, and you can access photos from your iCloud Photo Library.
