Two items,
1.) Can the apple tv report the devices it can "see"? If not, why?
2.) Can the ATV be wired?
3.) What about homes with multiple ATVs, how does that work?

I Have this question myself, but pretty sure I know the answer. Being that 99% Of the Apple reps I spoke to never even heard of HomeKit, I took it upon my self and was experimenting with all my devices. Unfortunately remote access still does not work for me for Homekit as a whole( meaning I can control my devices remotely but only within each individual products app- Not in a HomeKit universal app that supports ALL HomeKit devices) , but my Apple TV is hard wired so I tried it wireless through wifi too and it still didn't work the way it should. So I would say either wireless or hard wired would be ok as it's still communicating with your SSID ( Network name).
I have yet to venture into home automation but am interested. This link may be helpful....

I have two apple TVs and have had very poor experience with HomeKit so far. I've reset my entire homekit setup twice now and it's still not working very well. I've noticed that when the Apple TV is not asleep, I'm able to control my home kit enabled door lock just fine over wifi and over LTE when I'm not home. As soon as that sucker goes to sleep, I have issues 99% of the time. The ATV is about 10 feet from the home kit device.
Not sure if others have experienced the same. Keeping the Apple TV from going to sleep is not a good option either since I have it set to turn my tv and home stereo on/off (one of the touted features of ATV4).
Hoping the next OS update makes some improvements but I'm not so sure. So far HomeKit has always seemed like a half-baked solution (probably why this hasn't really been covered much at all during recent Apple launches).
I had to rebuild my HomeKit set up as well. It is back to working, for now.
