Red X appearing in PowerPoint files

I am guessing here.

typically the red X means it is an embedded "something" - a graphic, chart, etc -- and the reference is missing. The question is "why?"

Do you use some app that breaks in 10.11 that made those embedded whatevers?

I've got the same problem. Wondering if upgrading to Mac Office 2016 would fixed the issue.

causes include but not limited to

the path to the images not being linked

the image is too large

the image is not compatible

so one client makes the document (client 1)

you get the document and it's got red x's

you mail to another client (client 2) and it opens?

are client 1 and client 2 in the same office? on the same network? are you?

Not necessarily. I can work a file for a while, close it, re-open it and it shows the Xs. Source of images are multiple but usually: Screenshots, png or jpg from my laptop or our server, from Internet. I have worked the same way for the last few years and never had any issues of that kind until recently. The problem seems to be occurring at irregular intervals. When I restart my laptop the problem is solved for awhile.
