Q: Migration assistant user account confusion

I am attempting to migrate the data/files/folders/etc from my PC to my new imac. I have downloaded and installed the migration assistant on the PC, got the mac communication with the PC, selected the items I want to transfer the when I continue I get a pop up window stating a user account named XYZ already exists on this MAC. You must change the user name to resolve the conflict. There are two dialogue boxes both with XYZ in them one states new name (XYZ) the other states User account name (XYZ)

I set this MAC up with XYZ, same as the 13 year old PC,  am I going to loose my user account name on the MAC because I am migrating from the PC?

Also, I have entered a new name and continued but nothing happened.

What is the best way to migrate with out having to change my MAC user name if possible ?

Thank you

iMac, iOS 9.1

    Hi 4377hn,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with your migration. Normally, you should be allowed to change the name of the migrated account, which would then create a new separate user in addition to the current user on your Mac, as noted here:

If you transfer an account that has the same name as an account on your new Mac, you're asked to rename the old account or replace the one on your new Mac. If you rename, the old account appears as a separate user on your new Mac, with a separate home folder and login. If you replace, the old account overwrites the account on your new Mac, including everything in its home folder.

If this is not working correctly as you describe, you may want to try changing the account name (short name) on your existing account on the Mac prior to migration. In that case, you may find the steps outlined in the following article helpful:
