el capitan mac to mac airdrop problem

This is SO frustrating. I am sitting 3 feet from my daughter, and want to airdrop some files, but we cannot get a connection. We both have El Capitan, latest updates, and I can see on the forums that this is a huge issue for this update. How can I fix it? Please don't just send a link on "how to airdrop" or "privacy settings" . I know how to airdrop, the privacy settings are correct, but there is no connection. I have tried every fix I can find in support communities. Please send an update that actually fixes this. Or send some new instructions. I thought APPLE products were supposed to be intuitive?? We have spent almost two hours searching for solutions....and the best solution I have found is that it simply won't work on El Capitan. Help!!
