Mac OS XThe important step is to get your computer to recognize the iPod, so that you can try doing a Restore using iTunes. Assuming all of your songs and other media are in your iTunes library (on the computer), you don't need to worry about retrieving data from the iPod. Restore and sync everything back.
If you have not already, do a Reset

In your case, you can do this while the iPod is connected to your computer, which is running iTunes. What, if anything, does the iPod's screen show after you press and hold down the Menu and Center buttons?
If that does not get your iPod recognized, try putting the iPod into Disk Mode.

Does it go into Disk Mode? If it does, that is good. When you connect it to computer, iTunes will hopefully prompt you to do a Restore. If it fails to go into Disk Mode, or fails the Restore process, the most likely cause is faulty iPod hard drive.
